Start with what your hands are doing
A headlamp is useful when both hands must remain available: packing equipment, handling tools or preparing a campsite. A flashlight lets you aim independently of your head and pass the light to another person. Neither format is the best choice for every job.

Compare the complete experience
Try each format at the actual working distance. Look for shadows, reflected glare and awkward switch positions. For a headlamp, check the headband, tilt mechanism and battery placement. For a flashlight, check grip, pocket fit and whether you can operate the switch while holding other equipment.
A useful sample trial
Set up three tasks: finding an item nearby, reading a label and illuminating a more distant object. Use the same conditions for both samples. Record which format made the work easier, rather than selecting the largest lumen number.

For retailers and distributors
Build the assortment around distinct jobs. A hands-free model and a compact handheld light may serve different customers without competing only on price. Request packaging that clearly shows the intended handling method and supplied accessories.
